Engines are plug-ins for the programs ChessBase, Fritz, Junior and Nimzo. They contain the chess playing intelligence and are modules separate from the graphical user interface.

All 32 Bit engines run in ChessBase 7.0, Fritz5.32, Junior5 and Nimzo99. 16Bit engines do not run under Windows NT. Under Windows95/98 every engine works everywhere.
